Winter is in full force. Winter projects keep us going and before
we know it we will be seeding greens in the high tunnel and starting
long-season herb seedlings. The Ithaca Farmers Market (at
steamboat landing) will reopen in April but in the meantime meat and eggs can be purchased directly on
the farm. We've made many updates on the website (more pictures and
updated details).
11/08/08
Fall will soon change to winter but now before it does we have
warm weather to make great progress on fall projects. The garlic
is planted, field cover crops are planted and we are well into building
a cow barn for hay storage and protected winter feeding. The Ithaca Farmers
market continues till the Saturday before Christmas. We have
duck, beef, pork , garlic, onions, shallots, and
potatoes, eggs, and fresh herbs.
9/20/08
Fall's bounty is ready. The
garlic crops looks and tastes great and is now fully cured. We have garlic for
eating and planting, a complete line of pork, onions, shallots, and
potatoes, eggs, fresh herbs. and plants. We also have Tamworth
piglets for sale for breeding or raising up for feeder pigs. Our
beef is currently
hanging (dry aging) and should be available in a few weeks.
7/31/08
We've just finished the meat chickens that we are doing this
year. They are of French genetics and were purchased as chicks
from a hatchery that maintained their breeding stock on pasture.
They are a slow growing breed that grazed extremely well. There
flavor and texture is very well developed without being tough.
Our butcher just finished processing some great sausages from our meat
and all organic spices. The hot dogs will be great for a summer
bbq, the andouille is mild, juicy and great for grilling. The
smoked chorizo is spicy and full flavored but drier and best used in
dishes like jambalaya or spaghetti sauce that need a little kick!
There is also bacon from our retired sows that is wider and a little
fattier then regular bacon. Some of our customers prefer it!
More pork cuts will be available at the end of August, ducks at the end
of August, and beef in September.
The garlic crops looks great and is currently curing. Let us know
if you need any seed stock for planting- this is one thing we are
willing to ship.
7/8/08
We are having a tour of the farm sponsered by NOFA-NY.

7/3/08
It is officially summer. The rhubarb is almost finished and the
potatoes are all flowering. We're plowing in mowed thick stands
of rye covercops to make way for oats/peas, buckwheat and clover that
will all help next years crops. We still have a good selection of
herb plants and will continue to bring them to market all summer.
We'll have pepper transplants for just a few more weeks (Plant
now!!). Potatoes are garlic will be ready as early as the end of
the month. Fresh herbs are plentiful. Our meat selection is
a litle limited but we should be getting hot dogs, chorizo, and
andouille sausage back from our butcher next week. There will be more
pork around the end of August and Beef starting in September (maybe the
late part). We are doing a small number of chickens and are not
doing turkeys this year.
4/8/08
The Ithaca Farmers Market has now started (every Saturday from 9-3) and
we'll be there every week until it closes just before Christmas.
We have a good selection of pork, eggs, fresh herbs, garlic, some
greens, homemade soap, and dried herbs.
We've started up the greenhouse and transferred in slow growing plants
we've been growing since February. Soon it will be full and
overflowing. The garlic and rhubarb are up, the layer chicks are
growing, and the cows are counting the days until the calves are out.
2/19/08
It's that time a year again for our spring piglets to be born.
Now is the time to order our organic Tamworth feeder piglet or breeding stock if you
are looking to raise your own pigs. Although it still looks like
winter (10 degrees today but 50 degrees yesterday!) we are starting
seeds for the slow germinating and slow growing herbs. It will be
time to plant before we know it!
1/3/08
Ahhh, The new year is here. As much as we love Farmers' Market,
we must admit that we sure enjoy that first Saturday when we don't have
to be all prepped, packed, and out the door. We'll be glad when
it starts again but will enjoy the break.
12/20/07
Saturday December 22nd is the last Ithaca Farmers Market
of the year and site of the annual Rutabaga curl. Join us. We
will have a good supply of meat, dried herbs, garlic, soap...Once the
market is over check our website for our what we currently have, give
us a call or just stop by for self serve eggs and meat. We have 2 young gilts currently
for sale and let us know now if you need piglets in the
spring.
11/21/07
We have 70
layers (18 months old) for sale now
(picked up at the farm- we don't ship). We are pleased
to welcome 2 six month old Fjord
draft ponies to our farm (from Mandala
Farm in Maine). We have a good
selection of beef and pork including bacon, daisy hams, and corned
beef. We have organic pasture raised Turkeys (frozen) at
$3.85/ lb ( 18.5 to 19.5 lbs each). Call if you want to reserve
one.
10/10/07
We'll have more beef this weekend- its well worth the wait. After
the long process of breeding our Highland cattle and raising the calves
up we make sure we are patient to hang the meet for upto 2 weeks.
Aging concentrates the flavor and helps make the meat more tender.
8/25/07
Piglets are growing well- we still have feeder and breeding stock
available.more info.
Fall appears to be here.
8/21/07
Thanks everyone that came out to our recent on-farm pig workshop and as
part of the 2 county Farm Trail. We enjoyed seeing everyone and
hope you all had a great time. Onions will be harvested soon and
the potatoes are starting to mature. Our first beef of the year
should be ready this weekend after being dry aged for 14 days.
Over the last few weeks we have had 5 beautiful litters of Tamworth
pigs. Let us know if you are interested in feeder piglets or
breeding stock. We also
have a Tamworth
boar for sale- let us know if you need him! more info.
7/28/07 Summer
is hear and going quick. We will be having
an openhouse on August 19th from 12:30-5:00 as part of an organic
farm
trail and also having a workshop on hog raising basics (12-2).
Despite
some earlier dry weather, it has now rained several inches over the
last 10 days and the pastures are back growing well again. Our
onions are bulbing up well, potatoes are producing good sized tubers
and the garlic is all harvested and curing. We have some of the
largest garlic we have ever grown and have been personally eating way
too much of it! At the Ithaca Farmers Market we still have a good
selection of annual and perrenial herbs, fresh herbs, new potatoes,
garlic, fresh onions, and of course a good selection of pork. We
will have our first beef of the season in about a month.
7/7/07
We finally have more bacon and more. Last
night we tasted it all and it is great. We have regular bacon,
cottage bacon (smoked, sliced shoulder), "fatty" bacon (from older
pigs- larger slices, fatty, more developed flavor), and "daisy"
hams. We havn't had these for a few years and have worked with
our butcher to reproduce this great ham. "Daisy" hams are made by
boning out the ham into the three individual muscles, curing them, and
then netting them individually and smoking them. The results is a
small ham (less then a pound to just over two) that is succulent, not
overly salty, with excellent developed flavor. And of course all
our smoked products are certified organic and all the ingredients are
certified organic as well ( well, the water and sea salt can't be
called organic!).
6/24/07 Call if you are looking for tomatoes (we still have
some plants -come take a flat!) Bacon next week? (hopefully)
6/19/07 We
continue to have excellent peppers (hot and sweet), tomatoes, and herbs
(common and unusual). We now have more Chorizo, breakfast, and
mild italian so we have a complete line of pork sausages and
cuts. We are low on bacon but more is currently being smoked and
will be ready soon. More
updates
5/24/07 Memorial
day is coming and for many that means grilling. Come to the farm
or market (on Saturday) for excellent organic hot dogs, italian
sausages, spareribs, pork shoulder (for pulled pork).. Give us a
call if you would like us to put a pre-order together for you.
Our plants are growing great and we'll have a complete display at
market. Tomatoes, Herbs (common
and unusual), and peppers are all ready.
(4/21/07)The
Ithaca Farmers Market has
started, the snow has melted, and the grass is growing. Check our
our new Wanted section and our plant brochure. Plants are available
at Farmers Market. Maybe you have
something that we need! We've also added an explanation of why organic feed prices continue to increase.
At the farm we currently have
eggs and pork (all cuts, sausages, and smoked meats). We have a complete
price list
of the meat we
currently have.
We will
have beef in late summer. We are taking a break from raising
broiler chickens, ducks, and birds for the back yardflock but will be
back with them next
year. (We will continue to have eggs.) Learn
about the haying with horses workshop.
4/20/07
The snow from a big snow storm (1 1/2 feet on Monday) is almost
gone. The cows have held out and we expects calves starting
anyday. Market is started.
3/21/07
Spring was here for a few days but now winter is back with a foot of
light snow. Piglets born today from Majolica (one of the
gilts) Warm in the hog barn eith the composting pack. And
the large unheated greenhouse is is waking up. Looks like we'll
have lots of fresh herbs for our first market in April. We never
got the greens planted last fall but have planted greens (2 weeks ago)
that should grow quick. Since we had two long beds in the 96'
long greenhouse unplanted we use our great horse Mira to till them up
with the single horse cultivator. It worked great- first time I
have tilled with a horse in March!
We are taking a "sabbatical" from raising broilers and ducks this
year. We needed to take a break from something to catch up on a
few things on the farms. We have grown fairly quickly over the
last few years and now have both a sow and cow breeding herd.
We'll take the freed up time to work on some infrastructure
inprovements, swim in the pond a little more, and try to make sure my
back can make it another 50 years. We plan to be back raising
broilers and ducks next year.
11/13/06
Fall is here and it won't stop raining. But we have processed our last
batch of chickens and are finishing up the fall chores before to the
snow comes for good.
7/22/06
Summer is going well (finally updated the website!). We got the
flooding rains but we missed most of the floods because we live on a
hill.
10/25/05
Well, fall is here with hints of winter. Our first snow was a few
days ago but our first real killing frost was only a week ago.
Lots of rain now and the pond is fillinig up! Now we just need to
finish everything outside before winter.
8/16/05
I'm providing some long overdue updates to the website. I'll keep
updating as time permits. The season has gone well and is the
hottest we have ever seen. We look forward to the fall to refill
our pond...
3/18/05
We've got snow on the ground it seems spring has started anyway.
We're filling flats for the greenhouse, checking the heater, and
setting up benches. The unheated greenhouse is planted and fresh
spinach, lettuce, and kale are being harvested. Perenial herbs
seemed to overwinter well- especially the Rosemary. Some of the
Rosemary is even blooming! Piglets continue to be born while
winter pigs go to the butcher.
11/17/04
Looking back at the entry of 11/4/03 I see we have had success with the
what we aimed for with the unheated greenhouse. Beds are full of
perrenial herbs with plenty of herbs left to harvest for the
Thanksgiving and even December markets. Greens are still being
harvested and we should also have a good supply to keep us happy all
winter.
10/15/04
I have finally made some updates to this website! A very wet
growing season is coming to an end. See you at market!
11/24/03
Despite tempertures as low as 15 degrees, 3 inches of snow and winds in
the 60's for two days, we had a day in the 60's to process our turkeys
and
try to finish up all those outside tasks before winter really sets in.
Too many tasks remain but most will get finished with the
remainder to finish in the cold (or spring).
11/4/2003
The main field season is over but farming continues. We just got
the plastic on a new unheated 30 by 96 foot greenhouse packed full of
tender
herbs, winter greens and other culinary herbs. The attempt here
is
to overwinter herbs that we can't do outside, extend the season on
these
and other hardy herbs, and work on winter produciton of greens.
We have moved into sows and now have six sows that are certified
organic. They have already produced three llitters so we
will have certfied organic pork in the spring.
6/24/03
Despite a fairly rainy spring with little sun the crops are doing well
and the animals are content. Culinary herbs are coming on strong
and strawberries are going gangbusters. We just finsihed a new
100' hoophouse that is now packed with basil, annual herbs, peppers,
and melons. A new unheated greenhouse is in the works
2/12/02
Winter is still here. It is hard to believe that we may be
planting some crops outside in two months. We have over 2
feet of snow in place. It is supposed to be -10f tonight, again!
12/10/02
After two years of having a website we have made our first changes.
Don't expect anything fancy anytime soon or for that matter
anytime. We like to farm but working on the computer isn't our
idea of a good time. Winter has come early and hard to central
New York. A
half a foot of snow covers the ground and we've already had several
nights
in the single digits and even below zero. Although most of our crops
are
either harvested or mulched for the winter, we are still enjoying salad
greens (only for ourselves) from the unheated section of our green
house.
Night time temperatures in there are routinely 20 degrees higher
than
outside.
