Spring…still waiting…

IMG_0588April is so close and yet we are still covered in thick frozen snow, the sun is weak when it appears, and the nights are cold. All the livestock seems to skulk about just biding their time until the real “spring” finally appears. A few piglets litters have come, but no cows have yet calved and the hens are still in winter lay mode. Our house is simply exploding with herb seedlings and we will be forced to turn on the propane in the greenhouse very soon.

There are a few signs of spring…just enough so we dont lose heart…a few robins, a pair of bluebirds, a bare patch of hillside below the pond, shedding ponies, and swollen lilac buds. Soon,,,,,very soon.

Spring Please

We are still buried deep in snow but the planting must go on.  Hundreds of seedlings are springing forth in our mud room and soon they must move out to the greenhouse.    Slow growing herbs like thyme, rosemary, and lavender are seeded very early in the year and hopefully they are blissfully unaware of the weather outdoors.  The passion flower cuttings are rooting vigorously,  the onions are germinating, the succulents are propagating….all in defiance of the cold.  Let Spring spring soon.IMG_4954[1]
